Mumford’s first book, published in 1922, tours the imagined commonwealths of the West: Plato’s Republic, More’s Utopia, Andreae, Campanella and Bacon, then the nineteenth-century visions of Buckingham, Bellamy, Morris and Wells. He sorts them into utopias of escape and utopias of reconstruction, and turns to the half-utopian myths of the country house and Coketown before proposing what a real utopia might require.
An early, lively work by the great American critic of cities and technology, with an introduction by Hendrik Willem van Loon. Download the free EPUB.
