This is not a record of events but of feeling. Jefferies describes climbing the Wiltshire downs as a young man to lie in the grass and pray for a fuller soul, and his growing conviction that there is something beyond deity and immortality that the mind can reach. Sun, sea, the London crowds and the ancient past all become occasions for this intense meditation.
A singular 1883 confession prized by readers of nature writing and mystical prose. Download the free EPUB.
