An American explorer’s ship, driven north past the pole, slips through an opening into the interior of the earth, where an inner sun lights the kingdom of Atvatabar. There the explorer finds strange machines, an elaborate priesthood and the goddess Lyone, whose love draws him into the kingdom’s religion, politics and wars.
