Two elderly sisters peer through their lace curtains as new neighbours move into number three: the formidable Mrs. Westmacott, a cigar-smoking advocate of women’s rights. Around her circle a retired doctor and his two daughters, an admiral and his son, and a family plot of money and courtship, as the little community on the edge of London discovers what the women of the future may be like.
