Bargemen, skippers and night-watchmen fill most of these twelve stories, arguing religion on the Thames and plotting small revenges. Between the comedies sit darker pieces: “The Well”, “In the Library” and “The Monkey’s Paw”, in which a mummified charm from India grants an elderly couple three wishes at a terrible price.
