A young Englishwoman takes the cure at a German spa and sits down to bread soup with the Herr Rat, the Baron, the Frau Fischer and a crowd of opinionated fellow guests. Thirteen stories follow the pension’s meals, gossip and air baths, along with darker village pieces such as “Frau Brechenmacher Attends a Wedding” and “The Child-Who-Was-Tired”.
