Stories of Bengal in English translation. In the title piece a dying young man, Jotin, is nursed by his devoted aunt while his wife keeps her distance; elsewhere a skeleton tells its own history, a zemindar is drawn into court against a poor tenant, a miser’s treasure is guarded by a terrible bargain, and an elder sister bears the cost of family duty.
