In 1869 Mill began a book on socialism, convinced that its ideas were spreading among workers everywhere. These surviving chapters set out the socialist objections to the existing order, test them against the evidence, weigh the practical difficulties of collective ownership, and argue that the idea of private property is not fixed but changes with society.
A short, fair-minded work by the great liberal thinker, still a useful starting point on the debate. Download the free EPUB.
