From late 1890 until shortly before his death, Stevenson wrote long journal-letters from his estate at Vailima in Samoa to his friend Sidney Colvin in London. They report clearing the bush, building the house, Samoan politics and colonial quarrels, and his writing day by day, including the struggle to finish the David Balfour sequel.
