Charity Royall was brought down from the lawless settlement on the Mountain as a child and raised by lawyer Royall in the dull village of North Dormer. Bored at her post in the musty library, she meets Lucius Harney, a young architect sketching old houses, and one summer of country walks and a Fourth of July in the town changes her life.
