Three tales of the White Hills of New Hampshire make up this small collection: The Great Stone Face, about a boy who grows up gazing at a face formed by nature on a mountainside; The Ambitious Guest, about a traveller sheltering with a family beneath a perilous notch; and The Great Carbuncle, a quest for a fabled gem. Passages from his Sketches from Memory complete it.
Short, moral and atmospheric, these are among Hawthorne’s best-known stories and a fine first taste of him. Download the free EPUB.
