When the daughter of a comfortable small-town family announces her engagement, every relative has an opinion, and each chapter is told by a different one in the voice of a different author. William Dean Howells writes the father, Mary E. Wilkins Freeman the unmarried aunt, Henry James the married son, and the authors pull the plot in competing directions.
