After Dr. Madden dies without the insurance he meant to buy, his daughters are left with almost nothing in a country with more women than husbands. Alice and Virginia scrape by as governesses, while young Monica escapes into marriage with an older man. Rhoda Nunn and Mary Barfoot train women for office work instead.
An 1893 novel about women, work and marriage, frank and still remarkably sharp. Download the free EPUB.
