A dreamy young man in the Danish countryside falls in love and has his innocence tested by grief; flagellants march into a plague-stricken Italian town; a widow chooses a late second love over her grown children’s approval. Anna Grabow’s translation gathers four of Jacobsen’s finely observed stories with an introduction on his place in Danish letters.
Jacobsen, admired by Rilke, brought a painter’s precision to Danish prose, and these stories are an ideal way in. Download the free EPUB.
