Chosen for Everyman’s Library, this anthology runs through the English essay in a hundred pieces, starting with Caxton and Chaucer and moving to Bacon on adversity, travel, ambition, gardens and studies. Later sections bring in Addison, Steele, Johnson, Goldsmith, Hazlitt, Lamb and their Victorian successors.
