Beginning in a hospital waiting-room, where Hildegarde Graham hears of a convalescent boy who needs country air, the story follows her through a summer in a village with the elderly Miss Wealthy, orchard afternoons, river outings, story evenings and a Flower-Day. A mysterious house in the wood brings the season’s chief adventure.
