Harry Smith joined the Rifles as a young man, fought through the Peninsula from Coruña onward, and after the sack of Badajoz rescued a fourteen-year-old Spanish girl, Juana, whom he married within days. His own account runs on through Washington, Waterloo, the frontier wars at the Cape and the Sikh battle of Aliwal; his editor completes the story to 1860.
One of the liveliest soldiers’ memoirs of the age; the South African towns of Harrismith and Ladysmith are named for Harry and Juana. Download the free EPUB.
