Bergson contends that psychology goes wrong by treating feelings as quantities and inner life as a row of separate states laid out like points in space. Real conscious time, which he calls duration, is a flowing whole in which successive sounds melt into one another, and once this is seen the old dispute between determinists and their opponents dissolves.
