An editor pieces together the troubled history of the Colwans of Dalcastle, then hands over to the memoir of Robert Wringhim, raised to believe himself one of God’s elect beyond the reach of sin. A charming, shape-shifting companion appears at his side and encourages him to persecute his brother George, leaving the reader to decide whether the stranger is a delusion or the Devil.
