Miles Coverdale, a minor poet, leaves his Boston bachelor rooms for Blithedale, a community of reformers who mean to live by shared farm labour. There he watches the magnetic Zenobia, the fragile Priscilla and the single-minded Hollingsworth, a philanthropist bent on reforming criminals, while the mystery of the Veiled Lady draws them all together.
