Christie Devon, twenty-one and orphaned, announces a declaration of independence and leaves her aunt and uncle’s farm. She tries life as a servant, an actress, a governess, a companion and a seamstress, sinks into despair, and is rescued by a laundress, a gentle minister and a florist named David Sterling as the Civil War approaches.
Alcott’s 1873 novel for adult readers, drawn from her own years of working for wages, and a pioneering story of women and labour. Download the free EPUB.
