The Will to Believe (1897) collects William James’s accessible essays in what he called popular philosophy. In the title piece, James argues that on certain “live” questions—especially religious and moral ones—where evidence cannot decide, we have an intellectual right to believe in advance of proof. It is a landmark defence of faith against strict evidentialism.

The surrounding essays explore chance and determinism, the meaning of moral life, and the value of human effort in an uncertain universe, all in James’s warm, vivid, conversational style. As one of the founders of pragmatism and modern psychology, James writes philosophy that speaks directly to ordinary readers facing real choices. The volume is an ideal introduction to a thinker who insisted that ideas must be tested by the difference they make to life.
