Written between 1883 and 1885, Thus Spake Zarathustra is Friedrich Nietzsche’s most celebrated and poetically ambitious work. In it, the philosopher-prophet Zarathustra descends from his mountain solitude to preach his visions of the Ubermensch (the overman), the eternal recurrence, and the will to power to an uncomprehending world. Nietzsche cast his philosophy in prophetic, lyrical prose that owes as much to the Bible and Goethe as to academic philosophy.
