This first volume of The Homilies of the Anglo-Saxon Church contains the Sermones Catholici, or Catholic Homilies, of Ælfric, Abbot of Eynsham, presented in the original Anglo-Saxon with an English translation. Composed around the turn of the eleventh century, these homilies were intended to instruct the English faithful in the doctrines and stories of the Christian faith. They are among the finest monuments of Old English prose and a major source for Anglo-Saxon religion and language.
Ælfric’s clear and elegant homilies offer insight into the beliefs, preaching, and devotional life of the late Anglo-Saxon Church. The parallel Old English and modern English text makes them accessible to students of the language and of medieval religion alike. Readers interested in Old English literature, the early English Church, or medieval preaching will value them. This free EPUB edition revives a classic edition of Ælfric’s Catholic Homilies.
