Twain lists the rules of literary art, notes that Cooper breaks eighteen of them in The Deerslayer alone, and then goes through the evidence — the sunken boat, the misplaced stream, the Indians who fall past the ship. It is criticism as blood sport, and still the best short lesson in how prose fails.
