Alcott was a physician and the first president of the American Vegetarian Society, and this is his case, built mostly out of other people’s testimony: letters from doctors, farmers and ordinary correspondents who had given up meat, alongside the historical and medical arguments as they stood before anyone knew what a vitamin was.
