Smollett went abroad for his health in 1763 and found everything wanting: the inns, the food, the roads, the French, the Italians, the Venus de’ Medici. Sterne mocked him as Smelfungus, but under the fury is a doctor’s precise observation and a great deal of hard information nobody else recorded.
