Soane spoke Persian and Kurdish well enough to pass, and travelled from Constantinople down the Tigris and into Kurdistan as a Muslim — living with tribes no European saw as an equal. His notes on the Kurdish tribes and the Chaldean Christians are a principal source for the region before 1914.
