Vámbéry travelled from Tehran to Khiva, Bokhara and Samarkand in 1863 dressed as a wandering Sunni dervish, at constant risk of exposure and execution. He is the only European to have seen those courts from inside the pilgrim caravans, and the book was a sensation across Europe.
