Irving talked his way into rooms in the half-ruined Alhambra in 1829 and lived there among the squatters and caretakers, collecting their stories. The result alternates between sketches of the palace as he found it and the tales of buried treasure, enchanted Moors and lost princesses that he gathered on the spot.
